Kilonova ripped through Newcastle Upon Tyne Metal 2 The Masses just months after forming in 2017. Ellen, Joe, Jonny and Steve took on the fiercest new talent from around the North East to win a place at the legendary Bloodstock Festival in August 2018. Kilonova quickly followed this up with appearances at Heaven and Hell Fest, and shows in Nottingham and Edinburgh with the likes of A Ritual Spirit, Turbyne and Ashen Reach.
‘Omnicide’ is a fast-punching thrash masterpiece that mustn’t be missed. The frantic rhythm of ‘Straight to Hell’ gives a meteoric start to the EP. Jonny and Joe on lead and bass produce a dirty Metallica style groove that drives the track. Ellen cuts through the mix with her distinctive screams. The Bloodstock festival experience seems to shaped the early tracks with a desire to thrill and tease the listener.
The riffing in ‘Hang the Hangman’ and ‘Ivory Tower’ is equally fast. The aptly named Kilonova appear determined to tear open the fabric of spacetime with their raucous tempo. Steve is explosive on these tracks with blast beats and fills that match the guitars for pace.
‘Own Enemy’ and ‘Blood in The Water’ give the listener some space to breathe. Kilonova prove they are just as capable at writing slower tracks. The clean alt-rock vocals from Ellen on these two tracks give the EP a broader reach. There is plenty here to admire and enjoy from a band still exploring their sound.
A special mention to Olly Cobb at Blast Recording who has captured the live energy from Kilonova in this amazing recording.
