EP REVIEW: ‘Black Oil For A Soul’ CAUSTIC MIND

Berlin based alt rock band CAUSTIC MINDS have recently released their new EP ‘Black Oil For A Soul’ which is available through all streaming sites. The fuzz drenched EP takes influences from The Kills and The Dead Weather and features Daniel Viseras Calvache (Guitarist), Spain, Michiel Sybers (Bass), Chris Crabtree (Drums), and Laura Jiménez Alvarez (Singer).

The EP mixes female punk vocals with alt rock riffs, and soulful indie melodies to create a unique and powerfully catchy EP. The sing along choruses are both dark, and yet surprisingly uplifting. There’s lots of textures to each of tracks, and this possibly stems from the bands members coming from as far and wide as Granada,  Antwerpen, Britain , and Mexico City.

Guitarist Daniel Viseras Calvache says:  “‘Black Oil for a Soul’ includes the loud voices that you wanna hear from a starting band, with the subtlety of young musicians with a will to grow and create music.”

For sharp lyrics and passionate vocals the EP has a lot to offer. Eyes on Fire and Destroyer have close and personal tones and it’s the vocals that take centre stage. Laura gives the listener some strong advice about how not to treat women. As the band join in with vocals the songs gets you nodding and shouting along with the lyrics

Carry on is another catchy rock track with a shouty chorus. Laura talks closely about moving forward after being hurt. The powerful rock riffs drive the song forward and the heady drums fills are a delight. In stark contrast Blacklist is a bluesy, stripped back, fuzz-rock anthem. Haunting vocals and a toe tapping bass line that were made for hot summer days.

There’s plenty of great tunes here for fans of Queens of the Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys . Make sure you follow the band’s FACEBOOK page for upcoming dates.
